About this last term Studying English

How did you like this subject at university? What about the use of blogs?

I like it pretty much, because it's different from the other subjects, i think it makes me break the routine. You know, about studying arts,  other subjects are workshops or some theoretical topics we suppose to have to understand well. When studying, I realize what I was learning was only some advices about what should I do if I want to work on art, dedicating most part of my life on that I mean. Therefore, the way I work, my methods, only belongs to me, and no one could teach me that. Teachers are suppose to guide my in this because of their experience doing more or less the same. Okay, this post isn't about that, what I want to say is that I have a good experience learning English this term.

About the blogs, I've never been used one before, sure I know them from long ago, but I never resolve to do one of them, write a bit, make some post. I do write, but I usually don't finish what I write for myself, so thats why I didn't post it on Internet too. But I think it's a good idea, it makes me memorize some vocabulary. Seriously, I was getting rusty.

What aspects of your English need to be improved and how do you plan to do this?

Most of all, I was lacking some vocabulary since long ago. As I told, writing here on the blog have helped me fair much. Besides, I'm starting reading some novels on English, I think that will help me. I have got the Bram Stoker's Dracula and the picture of Dorian Grey in English, I'm reading the first and I hope star reading the latter soon.
I already watch some movies on English (English subbed) and is some useful as well. Is really interesting how the accentuation of people change from movie to movie.
Outside the English class, how much are you using English these days? What for?

I don't speak in English. I admit I get some embarrassed when I talk in English and we just speak in Spanish in this country, so I don't do it much, about nothing. But what I do (and I did not mention it on this post before) is reading papers, interviews and several articles on English, mostly about arts or some science matters. More than be interesting news, they are useful to me, they help me get ideas for my work, this thing we can call fiction, like in a movie, but in a work of art. That's what my work is about most of the time.

My future job

- At university, what major have you taken / are you thinking of taking? Explain why.

I've taken sculpturing studies as major. It wasn't a hard decision to me. I was thinking on learning the basics on constructing an object on his environment and that inevitably lead me to sculpture. Because a work of art is a work on his space, dealing with or making a connection on it. You just have to think, where the people can see or interact with an artwork? Inside a space, I mean, the museum or a gallery, for a start, and then in the place we can name as 'abstract space' inside the subconscious of the spectator. Space is very important concept to understand and in sculpture we are just using it all the time.

- What kind of job would you like to have? Describe.

I would like to work on producing my projects onto works that I can expose. I also would like to work as a curator and make group exhibitions. I would like to know lots of artists coming from other schools and make them exhibit their works together, for example, with a concept in common. And finally make some publications about this experiences.

- What aspects would you consider  when choosing your job?

Basically it has to be a work that I would like to do. And a job that makes me think I don't wasting my time on it. I would like to have several jobs and keep studying, because I like to do it. I think I have to learn some couple more things yet.

- If you were asked in a job interview about your strengths and weaknesses, what would you say?

About weaknesses, I'm not use to be much punctual. Curiously, that doesn't happen that much to me when I have to go to a job. Because I got some nervous about being late so it makes me be more punctual. I have a strengthness too, is that when I say somebody I'm going to do something for him (in job) I put all my effort on do it. After all, that's why they would pay me for.

Sweden ran out of trash!

This is very interesting new. As you read, Sweden just ran out of his own trash because they used it to make energy. Sounds cool, isn't it? Not much for them, though. Now they have to import garbage from other countries! Sounds ironic in part, but I think is better that way. Because that means we could eliminate all the trash accumulated from decades and use it for good, and nobody likes dumps. They are too smelly and unhealthy.

What would happen if trash were that important to us in this country? People just wouln't throw away his trash, and it wouldn't exist so many illegal dumps across the country. I think we need some more time to have more recycling habits, if somehow we could organize, I just don't see why we can't reuse our garbage.

Anyway, they way Sweden use it garbage is by incinerating to produce electricity. So only 4 percent is stored in their dumps. Now they import garbage from Norway. They burn it and send it back as ashes. Norway is even paying Sweden to do that. What a deal!

Here's the link where I got the news. In the meantime I'll figure out if someday in this country we could be more like Sweden. I think we are actually acquiring more environmental friendly habits, and I want to believe we can achieve it.

Thinking green

Taking care of environment is getting popular since last 20 years. Is better this way, you know, we are talking about the place we live, and we want to live fine, nor we?
So, let's keep going with the questions:

- Where do people learn about enviromentally friendly practices?

I think the main place where people learn about environmentally friendly practices is at school. Is important to learn this practices when we are children, as the way we should live on future, to preserve the planet. But that's not all, of course. The most important to place not only this but all kind of habits is at home , we must be responsible about that.

- Have you incorporated recycling into your habits? Describe

I actually haven't completely acquired recycling habits, but I do some things. some of them I learnt it on the video about recycling posted ago (top ten tips for recycling http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjbSEIOUp4w) like re-use plastic carry bags avoiding discard them, or squash my bottles before throw them up.

- Do you use a bike or your legs instead of a car?

Sure. I prefer to walk whenever I can. I must travel to classes and is so far that I have to take the bus. I can't make it otherwise. I don't have a bike yet because my parents think it's a some dangerous. It's a bit true, but I would use it for short travels so I don't see much trouble on that, so I'll get one soon.

- Have you joined or supported any eco-organisations? Why/Why not?

I haven't joined anything. I just make the effort and haven't gather information about that. I'll search on Internet for  it I promise.

- What else have you done /would you like to do?

I would like to make compost at home, if I would have the place for it. I'm working on reduce my electric consume too.

- What have you done to reduce your carbon footprint?

Let's see. I travel on bus and avoid car rides. On vacations I'll grow a tree. There are two things. I'll make a plan to do more.

- What's missing in our society/Santiago regarding this issue?

I think it's very important to learn to separate trash, on plastic, organic, paper, etc. At least in Santiago  I don't see that happening. Other important thing is improve public transport in regions, because is not much clean. They actually use old buses that were discarded from Santiago.

Music I like

This is pretty similar to some kind of interview. I don’t talk so much about music so I’ll give it a try and let’s see what happens.

- What kind of music do you enjoy the most?

I think the music i enjoy the most are 80's. But i usually listen some electro and even sometimes some jazz and bossa. I have no real preferences in music and I’m always searching for new sounds. Most of the time it’s not so easy and requires some practice, it looks easier than it really is.

- Why do you like this kind of music?

I can’t say it completely. I feel that 80's songs have something nostalgic that I enjoy much. It must be some synth sounds we usually listen on that songs. I have to say that the songs from 80’s I really like are just a few, but synth’s sounds they have in common

- When do you listen to this music?

I use to listen music when I’m going on bus to classes. Is a very long trip, so I pass the time with my earphones on and sleeping . Sleeping makes the travel seems shorter and the music makes it less boring. When I’m back at home. Late at night, I listen music as well. At that time I use to listen new discs. I’m always searching for a new interesting sound.

- What effect does this music have on you?

This music relaxes me. It keep my mind thinking in other things so it keeps me calm. During the night it helps me sleep too.

Here are two songs i like from 80's.

The good and bad points of the first semester

Last semester was full of interesting new things, like the new things I learnt about arts and some ideas I though, but it was pretty strange too. Somehow I couldn't realize than it was actualy ending when for me it was just starting. It was stressfull, but I think than after all it wasn't so bad, I mean it really could be worse as I can see today thinking on that. The most thing I´ve been worried from then is that I'm seriuosly needing to find a job because I just don't have enough money for the things I need, this is getting complicated, and though I wouldn't like to works on weekends I think this is my best option. I'm hoping everything will be better for this semester, even next year. I have to keep mi mind clear and focus and keep going, you know, hanging in there. After all, I enjoy been on faculty and my classmates are really good friends. I suppose if I got a job soon I'll invite them some drinks too = ) .

What about fashion at arts?

If you think that painting is the way artists observe and then show their physical and emotional environment, then for sure you can expect to see plenty of features from the people and their living exposed over the canvas of a painter, and that's exactly what the exhibit at Musée D'Orsay put on focus through the impressionism's artists work.
The impressionism movement has been always associated to the way we observe nature. But on their paintings we can also see the way they represented the French culture and the urban landscape from early 20th century. We can even see how they put lot of emphasis on the way people dress, with 'elegance and display' as the review mention. Is not a surprise that things like this happen, thus the artist shows than he is more than an observer but somehow part of this society too.
Through the paintings from artists like Manet, Monet and Degas, including dresses from the collection of Parisian museums, the exhibit shows how they take interest in fashion, as they painted people in motion, outside, on streets and squares. Very much interesting and distant work work from the Académies paintings, who otherwise used to paint inside their workshops simulating scenes.
For this exhibit (last until 20 january 2013) three museums have joined, Orsay, the Metropolitan Museum of New York and the Art Institute of Chicago. As you can see this is a huge exhibit.

A painting showing the social life in France by that time, painted by impressionism's artist Pierre Renoir.

I personally pick this article because i have an interest in fashion too, and by reading this article it seems logic the relation between the impressionism and fashion by the apparition of first fashion magazines in the same decades, and impressionism is really a great moment in paiting. I have my favourite influential person in fashion too. It's David Bowie, check it out.

My best holiday

My best holiday was about seven years ago. I went to the beach with my friends from high school and it was real funny. We were a group of ten and we didn't have much money so first we had to figure out how to spend it well. We started on November and it was so difficult to make an agreement than we finally went out on last days of February, but it worth.
We finally went to Quinteros for five days. We stayed on a very small cabin but we didn't care because we just used to sleep, passing almost all day at beach, taking baths or just sitting around and playing cards. It also was funny go for a walk during the night, when there was nobody and you could hear the sounds of the waves perfectly.
That vacations was important to us as well, since that year we graduated from high school. I specially enjoyed that vacations that's why I think they were the best.
From then I haven't seen my friends again so much, of course now we're all doing different things, I'm still studying for example, and others already finished and have a work. It doesn't matter if we're separated, I still remember the moments we pass and they were good.
Here are couple of pictures of that vacation (they're actually not the original pictures though you can still got the idea of how it was :P ).

So, this was me taking a bath with some snorkels on it, pretty casual photo. I didn't pose that's why I look so natural.
Here with some friends, enjoying taking us a picture more than playing volleyball, laughs.

A country I would like to visit

If anybody ask me about what country I would like to visit, I'd say something like 'I can't say it, because I would like to visit the entire Europe instead'.
Once ago I heard about somebody saying that Europe was endless, I mean, it doesn't matter if you've traveled and visited it several times, seeing places, their countries and cities, there's always something new that you haven't seen yet. That's why choosing a country to visit from Europe it's a little complicated, I'll put and effort on it. I think I'd choose Germany, just to start with.
I'd like to visit Germany, I find it's a so distant country to me. First of all, it has a long history, cultural and political (I guess we all know a bit of that), but what I'm most interested is in seeing his architecture. Of course I have to visit the place where Berlin wall was placed, I've been searching and now there are parks where it was. And then I'd visit his ancient buildings like the church of St Mary, it is from the thirteenth century! Although has been changed through the times. Finally I'd continue until seen the most contemporary buildings, like the Bauhaus archive, the museum that collects documents and art pieces related to the Bauhaus school, one of the most influential schools of design and architecture of last century.

My blogging experience

This half of the year  has becoming quite short, I don't know why, but without realizing it's already over and winter vacation is coming soon.
It has been a very intense months I can tell, but also has been interesting and I've learnt several new things.
I did enjoy blogging in english. Is not usual practice speaking other people and I haven't practiced myself for months too, just reading in english sometimes. So I think making blogs is a good idea, because I  could exercise not only my vocabulary but my writing too. I knew blogs before but never motivated to make one until now. So, what else I can tell? I also discover some tips about recycling making a post, not bad.
Although we had a few complications at the start with schedules and computers, then everything went better. In my opinion we just needed to pass through that complications and tried the best we could. Another thing that happened in this classes is that I met other people I didn't know. Even in this faculty where we are mot much people, actually I can't met everyone, so going to english I've met a few more classmates, and it was fun at the end, a nice experience.
I'm waiting to assist english next semester, and I hope to learn more things and improve my english.
See you around!

Mexico

I would like to visit mexico, because i've always wanted to see the aztec buildings. However I don't really know so much about mexico, just some facts. For example, most of the people on mexico are roman catholic, but in the past, before spaniards arrived to mexico, inhabitants workshipped several deities and even use to practice human sacrifices for them...Well, that happened long ago. Also, delicious chocolate is from mexico, peanuts and tomatoes too! If I ever go Mexico I would like to taste their food (and drink some tequila, restraining myself of course haha) and I would like to explore every aztec building possible. I just love them, I'm interested in go and see how they built that enormous cities in the past.
I've heard that in Mexico education is free, I'm not sure. Anyway, I would like to learn about mexican culture, about their traditional crafts and clothing and how they make it. I'm not sure about working and staying longer than a vacation there, first I would like to know this country a bit better.
I forgot to say that their beaches are so awesome, I've chosen a photo from a beach just to show you how incredible they are.

Recycling

Questions:
  What’s your carbon footprint?
My carbon footprint is 3.63 tonnes per year

What’s the average carbon footprint of a person?
In Chile the average carbon footprin is 3.87 tonnes.

Hand washing dishes can use up to 50% more of water than using an efficient dishwasher.

Only about 8% of global energy comes from renewables.

True or false? Appliances that are turned off don’t use any electricity.
False, they actually keep consuming electricity even when turned off.

Can you make paper out of hemp?
Yes, making paper out of hemp is cleaner than make conventional paper

Part 3- Video >> Top ten tips for recycling
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjbSEIOUp4w
Watch the video and choose the best 3 tips in your opinion.

1. Re-use carry bags. It’s true, in markets you can receive too much plastic bags to just simply discard them.
2. Squash bottles before throw them up. I actually didn’t do that and it's pretty handy.
3. Being punctual and don't miss the collection. Accumulate trash isn't healthy.

A photograph that I like

The first time I went on vacation with my parents to the south eleven years ago, I stayed at my aunt's house, in a small town near Osorno, in the tenth region. It was a pretty place, but the climate was quite cold, so even if it was summer we traveled with some winter coats with us. Every part of the ground was green because plants grew everywhere, and at evening you could always feel the pleasant smell of the fireplace burning form houses.
On the night the stars appeared by thousands, you could see every star, no pollution. In short, it was a lovely place.
It was curious too, because people jus went for a walk with their animals every morning, like the photo I took. Instead of common dogs, for example, those gooses You can see there were just like their beloved pets! I was a child, so I found it pretty interesting because I've never seen gosses until then.

I like animals

I like most animals. There are some scary animals, like spiders, or disgusting like cockroaches and several another creepy insects. However, they are part of the nature too, so they deserve to live like all others animals (yes, I am thinking on the species in danger of extinction because of man). But animals I like most are rhinos. They are pretty strange, at least that was my first impression when I was a child and I saw them on tv. They looked so calm, no need to be hurry or worry for something, they just stayed calm, taking mud baths and then rubbing their bodies in trunks. They didn't need anything else, and they were happy that way.
But don't get confused, because they are territorial animals and get nervous if somebody unknown approaches their territory. They can run at more than 30 miles per hour, faster than a human, and they have horns (africans have 2, but asian rhinos have only one), so if you are close to a group of rhinos, better be quiet and try to get away. And if you got traped, your last chance would be climbing a tree, if you could.

Some opinions

What is your opinion about owning an exotic pet?

As far as I'm concerned, I wouldn't have an exotic pet in my house. Just imagine having a snake as pet, quite scary! I prefer those animals living free on nature, I think they belong there and we shouldn't bother them or take them away.

What is your opinion about women in the military?
My opinion about is that women can do whatever they want, this really annoy me, because women are actually persons, they are free, as much as men. Of course, people don’t have to be always agree with anybody choices in life, but they really shouldn’t restrict others vocation. It would be worse for somebody to do something that doesn’t like. However, it doesn’t matter how agree I am about women in military, I suppose it depends on military who decide if recruit them is possible. Actually it is, so… Great, glad for that.
What is your opinion about violence on television?

The way I see, violence is more attractive than other  topics on television. That's why news are so terrible. Otherwise I'd started to think about this world as a horrible place because of violence, and I think it would be exaggerating. I usually avoid watching news because of violence, I just think it's so much to watch it everyday.

What is your opinion about killing stray dogs?
I think is not fair just kill some dogs because people doesn’t care about them. Otherwise, why they’re still on streets? Human tamed dogs thousand years ago (they were more like wolfs guess) when they were free, just like lions and elephants And now, when they depend on us, we just abandon them? It’s tragic. We must find ways to care about dogs and other tamed animals properly, is our responsibility. Just killing them is cruel, mi opinion is they actually don’t deserve that.

What is your opinion about 'barras bravas'?
I really don't understand why this people could be so aggressive. It makes me doubt if they enjoy the match or prefer confrontations with other team's fans. Some guys are really obsessive with his soccer team, and argue so much to defend it by all possible forms, to convince others that his team is better, like always, even if they lose and keep losing. And then this 'barras bravas' started to fight each other, even sometimes hurting players, same they supposedly admire.

Me and my cellphone

I have something to confess, I must say that, by far, my favorite piece of technology is my cellphone, and its because I just can't live without it. Is pretty useful indeed, whit all the applications phones have now (they're 'smartphones' rigth now). I can feel like a sir by listening some classical music, I write my memos on it, it's my alarm clock, my calendar. Also I can check my e-mails, its like everything! (I even have a world map on it). And is really worrying me, yes. How can I depend that much on something? I've always though if someday fell by accident into an island and got trapped there by myself... Well, I have to be optimistic, maybe I wouldn't need my phone there, not pretty sure about that.

Hot Chip

Talking about music I like, well I'm glad to talk about this one. Hot Chip is a band from London formed in 2000, they've released four albums, last one One life stand, in 2009. They are an electropop band, so they use synthesizers most of the time, besides piano, drums machines and bass. Their songs are not exactly music you can dance to, but songs with interesting and pleasant sounds. I like this band since I hear Boy from school from Coming on Strong album in 2006. I was starting to discover several indie bands and searching alternative sounds on electronic music and this song, I liked it immediately. This melodic song is a nice mixture between synth sounds and the singer Alexis Taylor vocals, fits perfect. Here's the song video. Hope you enjoy it.

Post 1: My Auto biography

I was born on november 16th in Santiago, Chile and grew up in this city too. Grew up in Maipú commune and studied there at Los Bosquinos school. Then I went to Pedro Poveda high school where I lived most entertaining days (not all of them nevertheless) and I learn plenty of things that help me to be person i am now or today. After a couple of years, I decided to study arts at Universidad de Chile and well... Here I am! I love this so I really enjoy my classes except theoritacal classes because sometimes I fall asleep on them (don't tell anybody).
I enjoy to watch movies and sometimes listen music, last time I've been listening lots of jazz.
